The short answer: the NYE Midnight Takeover is a supervised, all-night New Year's Eve celebration built for Howard County middle schoolers, grades 6 to 8. It runs Thursday, December 31, 2026, from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM at SoFive Columbia, with video game tournaments, VR, laser tag, RC racing, a silent party, and a countdown to midnight.
Most New Year's Eve plans in Howard County wrap up early. The family fireworks at Merriweather's Symphony of Lights are a great tradition, and they have the little ones home before 10. After that, the calendar is mostly dinners and parties built for adults.
Middle schoolers land right in the gap. A little old for an early night, not old enough for the grown-up plans, and completely ready to count down to midnight with their friends.
That gap is the whole reason the NYE Midnight Takeover exists.
What the night actually is
Picture one building, grades 6 to 8 only, going full speed for five hours. Students walk in at 8:00 PM and the whole place is theirs until 1:00 AM. There is no rigid schedule to keep up with. Everyone is free to chase whatever they are into, with their friends, until the countdown.
It is a supervised lock-in, which means the group stays in the building the entire night with Next Level Gaming Event Managers on the floor from drop-off to pickup. The freedom is real and the supervision is constant. Both things are true at once, and that is exactly what makes a five-hour night work for this age.
Everything happening under one roof
There is no single main stage. Stations run side by side all night, so nobody has to pick just one thing.
- Gaming tournaments on eight titles, with brackets running all night and the full library open for free play.
- Virtual reality streamed to the big screens, with co-op worlds and head-to-head matches the whole room can watch.
- Tactical laser tag in its own arena, with teams, cover, and a live scoreboard.
- RC racing on a real track, plus Battleball, giant games, a silent party, and lounge space to regroup.
- A countdown to midnight up on the big screen, with prizes and giveaways running all night long.
Who it is for
The event is grades 6 to 8, and that is the point. Everyone there is in the same age band, so the whole night is built around what middle schoolers actually enjoy, not watered down for little kids and not aimed over their heads at teenagers.
Some students come with their whole crew. Others come on their own and find their people within the first half hour. Both work, because there is always an open seat, an open team, and a bracket about to start. For more on that side of the night, see our guide to what happens at a gaming lock-in.
Why a night like this lands for this age
Gaming is already how this generation hangs out. Pew Research Center found that 72% of teens who play video games do it to spend time with others, and nearly half have made a friend through gaming (Pew Research Center, 2024). The Midnight Takeover takes that instinct and puts it in a room, face to face, instead of each kid alone on a couch.
That in-person piece matters more than it used to. In a survey of California teens, nearly 9 in 10 said being with friends in person matters to them, and more than half wished they saw friends in person more often (California Partners Project). A supervised room full of their peers on the biggest night of the year is about as good as that gets.
Parents get a real night too
Drop-off is 8:00 PM and pickup is 1:00 AM, which lines up neatly with an adult New Year's Eve. While the students are counting down with their friends, parents get their own night back. We cover how the supervision and logistics work in our drop-off New Year's Eve guide for parents.
